Abstract
Monasteries of the Eastern Ural used to be a part of the Perm diocese. They became economic entities of Еkaterinburg diocese in 1885. Their rapid growth took place in the 19th century as they turned into places of community living, acquired greater land plots and capital. The only monastery that gained nationwide popularity at the beginning of the 20th century was St. Nikolas monastery in Verkhoturie thanks mainly to Righteous Gideon relics’ pilgrimage.
