Abstract
The article analyzes Russian national and cultural identity formation. There are both philosophical means and semiotic methods of the analysis. The article shows that a particular sign-functioning system constitutes the foundation of national identity in Russia. The article focuses on the way these functioning signs of elusive character manifest themselves in different areas of Russian culture.
