Abstract
The article focuses on the issues of understanding the interpretation and its meaning in the context of both the historical retrospective of the domestic and foreign legal system, and in the doctrinal plane of modern Russian and foreign theory of law. The relevance of the topic is due to the very essence of interpretation as a daily law enforcement activity of the entire public legal apparatus. Hence, the definition of the fundamental principles of this process is seen as a priority task of legal science. The purpose of the study is to analyze political, legislative and doctrinal views on interpretation as a socio-legal phenomenon, followed by the development of its own definition based on the rules of formal logic and the principle of non-contradiction. In the text of the article, with the help of the existing views, the author’s definition of interpretation is formulated, to which the author applies logical rules, starting points of any activity related to legal interpretation. The methodology of the research is based on the widespread use of theoretical general scientific and private scientific methods of cognition, including synthesis, analysis, generalization, as well as special legal methods of retrospective historical analysis and comparative legal research.
