Abstract
This article examines active learning methods used in «Scientific and Public Speech Skills» course teaching to develop Economics Department Masters of Arts’ linguistic and rhetoric competencies in Liberal Arts University. These innovative educational approaches are analyzed in the learning techniques context used to shape both professional and general cultural students’ competencies. This paper demonstrates links between methods of functional stylistics and rhetoric teaching and Bloom’s taxonomy of learning objectives. The article provides examples of phased information retrieving through critical thinking: a lecture-discussion, a dialog-based seminar, student pair work on text analysis, test assignments and creative projects.
