Abstract
A digital platform is a multifaceted phenomenon encompassing technical and technological, economic, political, sociological, and other aspects. To formulate the legal regulation of digital platforms, it is advisable to construct a theoretical model that incorporates key characteristics of legal significance. This article develops one element of this theoretical model, a model of digital platforms as economic relations. A digital platform is a system of economic relations. It includes the relationship between the platform operator and its users, in which the operator facilitates interactions between users by providing them with technical and technological infrastructure. These relations are characterized by the managerial element and the binding of users to the platform. The operator manages users based on the principle of balancing the divergent interests of participants on both sides of the platform, employing an asymmetric approach. The operators have a vast array of data regarding user interactions, which they utilize to effectively manage operations, foster business growth, and generate supplementary revenue streams. The system of platform relations includes the relationships between users, their direct interactions, organized and regulated by the operator. Users, depending on their interests, belong to different sides of the platform. Platforms aggregate numerous users. Their number influences the platform’s value to them. In digital ecosystems, the system of relationships includes power-subordination relationships between the platform operator and app owners. The system of relationships can also include competition between operators of different platforms, characterized by the dominance of a few large digital platforms. To survive, platforms introduce innovative products, create ecosystems, and acquire competitors.
